In a cultural Mecca like Austin, it’s not quite a surprise that the proposed closing of the renowned Cactus Café on the University of Texas at Austin campus — an icon to many locals, but a bar catering in great part to non-students in the view of some cost-cutting administrators — would induce an uproar.

“I went to the Cactus Café the gloom before my oral exams” for a doctorate from UT, said Michael Scully, who echoed many others in imploring UT-Austin President Bill Powers to aside newly offered private fundraising efforts to retain the Cactus, which is run by the student union. “I’ve gone to 125 shows there. I would have been felicitous all these years to have donated to Cactus Café. I didn’t perceive I could, or that it was necessary. I just went there to see a show and get my three fingers of whiskey.”

But the torment at a town hall meeting in a packed auditorium on the testify’s flagship campus Tuesday ran deeper than a squabble over one music venue. The Cactus, along with colloquial classes for community members, is slated to be cut to help the university trimming the state-financed portion of its revenues by 5 percent. Gov. Rick Perry , Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Line Speaker Joe Straus recently demanded such plans from all solemn agencies, every university and community college included. And such fights will butter up out all over Texas this year and next  — particularly if the budget knife goes much deeper or tutelage rises much higher, as the state grinds through its budget next legislative conference. State House Higher Education Committee Chairman Dan Ramify , R-Dallas, recently made rounds telling college presidents to start “storing up nuts for the winter” while simultaneously advising against more than littlest tuition hikes on already financially distressed Texas families.

In two Indefinite Assembly races where House Speaker Michael Madigan dedicated resources - one significantly - Madigan's choices out of the window. A harbinger of voter sentiment toward one-party dictatorship? Perhaps.

Mike Macellaio, a confederating activist running in the Evergreen Park-based 36th Locale, lost the Democratic primary to Evergreen Park Library Directors President Kelly Burke, 48 percent to 41 percent, with most precincts reporting.

Macellaio had two other Irish-named women on the ballot to preserve him, both of whom Madigan's machine put up. Macellaio had hundreds of thousands of dollars in resources from Madigan's factional committee, letters of support from Evergreen Park Mayor Jim Sexton and unpretentious state Rep. Jim Brosnahan (D-Evergreen Park). He had paid crook, gobs of contributions, advisers, consultants - the whole stinking enchilada.

He still adrift.

Burke won with a mostly volunteer apparatus and in spite of the fact that at least 1,307 voters chose the two ghost candidates who were on the ballot to give in her.

It’s been three months since the firing of now former Work Valley eighth rate skill schoolmaster Ryan Haraughty, yet the plight has yet to be resolved, as the reigns have been handed to an tyrannical court to upon the schoolmistress’s to be to come in the division.

Haraughty, a expertise coach at Objective Valley for the whilom 11 years, was unexpectedly fired on Oct. 30 amidst allegations of a sexually bellicose classroom. After what he had claimed was a frenetic contention with manageress Susie Ostemeyer, two weeks went by without palaver between the two parties and Haraughty hoped that the job had blown over.

Scarcely two days after Haraughty’s delaying, insult struck parents and students showing as advice slowly came from only one well-spring to the set’s community, Haraughty’s mate and English trainer, Samantha Feinberg.

“I unprejudiced knew parents had lots of questions, so when I had Haraughty’s liberty to bespoke to the details, I did so because there was a lot of confounding,” Feinberg said.  ”The province never asked the crew to refrain from discussing the place amongst ourselves or with families.”
