UPFRONT:  MY VERY Honourable FRIEND is buying himself a drum kit. He hasn’t played drums in 20 years and lives in a domicile with two small children. I may not be an authority on child-rearing, but I think it’s right to assume that Dr Benjamin Spock et al are not big on drum kits and little children being in fasten proximity.

Could it be that the drum kit was meant as payback for three years of sleep deprivation to ancient, as in: ‘Let’s see how you tantrum-prone tykes guess about a little high hat when you’re the ones trying to suffer from some zees, eh? Not so much fun when the shoe’s on the other foot, now is it?’

But no. “I’m having a mid-autobiography crisis,” he tells me, with the deepest of sighs. He is no more than 40 years of age. I concede that he may, mathematically speaking, be in the midway of his life, but anyone who knows him can testify that the man has barely put adolescence behind him.

COUTANCES, France — US jazz guitar motto Pat Metheny chose a small town in northwestern France to start his new world tour with his latest project, a one-man automated orchestra.

The 55-year-old jazz supremo and champ of 17 Grammy Awards is returning to stages with his "Orchestrion" tool, complete with piano, a full-rythm section, robot guitars and skirl organs made from water bottles.

"I've never been so scared in my entire existence. Even I think I'm crazy," Metheny told AFP at the weekend in advance of the opening concert in Coutances, a rural town of 10,000 people in France's Normandy territory.

The town has gained some prominence as the venue for one of France's unsurpassed jazz festivals "Jazz sous les Pommiers" (Jazz under the apple trees), which last year attracted 65,000 visitors. Methany, who has a French woman, has performed here before.

"I've always had good experiences here," he told AFP, and "didn't demand to start the tour in Paris as I'm sure I'm going to be wisdom a lot in the first bunch of gigs."
