As the leading representative of Asheville, N.C.-based duo Mad Tea Party, Worthen puts an amplified ukulele to business on songs that draw heavily on a variety of musical styles and concealment topics from love to zombies. Her band — which also features multi-instrumentalist Jason Krekel on stimulating guitar, fiddle and drums — plays a free show at 9 p.m. today at Ghost Ranch Saloon.

When Mad Tea Reception started playing about six years ago, the band was taking a more society-oriented, early jazz direction, Worthen said. That amicable of music fit her choice of ukulele as a main instrument, and it worked with her throwback-molded singing look.

There still are traces of those early influences in what Mad Tea Party does today, but the stripe evolves with its tastes in music.

“There are so many different kinds of music, so we have a lot of numerous incarnations as far as what genres we’ve focused on over the years,” Worthen said.

For some folks, Mardi Gras doesn’t officially inaugurate in Mobile until the Excelsior Band plays.

Friday twilight, the group’s 10 members will don their signature jet suits and take to the streets as the Conde Cavaliers kick off Carnival condition in downtown Mobile.

Founded by John A. Pope to memorialize the birth of his son in 1883, the marching brass band continues to drama Dixieland and traditional jazz, said current bind leader Hosea London.

“We stay with what’s worked,” he said. “And we’re booming to keep doing it.”

What works for the band’s distinct bluster is three trumpets, three saxophones, a trombone, a tuba, plus bass and snare drums.

These days, members of the group take part in more than a dozen parades during Mardi Gras and often produce together the rest of the year. So far this season, they are booked for 15 parades, members said, which means they will hike way more than 35 miles in the name of good jazz.

I drilled a baby catch- in each end of the leg take forty winks and threaded a division of leather (or you can use any redoubtable close-fisted fasten) through the holes. Then you can tie the leather around your leg. It works spacious.
