WATERLOO — The eminent Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet performed Wednesday at the Boundary Institute’s Lazaridis Theatre, in a program of classics — in two odd senses of the word.

Before intermission, there were two works of the classical era (almost - one dates from 1817-19): a occupation by Mozart, the Fantasia in f, K. 608, and one by Antoine Reicha, moll and cohort of Beethoven’s — his Quintet, Op. 91 no. 3, in D.

People who have heard one possession by Reicha have almost certainly heard the quintet Op. 88, no. 2, or more favoured just its scintillating finale, and there was room to suspect that he was a one-m composer.

But, no - this one too was a real winner, at least when it’s played with the verve, unambiguousness, clarity, and downright ebullience that this ensemble brought to it.

Indeed, this was carrying out perfection itself — one is hard put to think of anything quite colleague to it. Reicha knew what he was doing in music for this combination.

Hailed as one the over the moon marvellous's loudest non-brass acoustic instruments, the nadhaswaram is traditionally made from a one of a kind variety of wood.

The instrument has a range of two and a half octaves - nearly the same to the flute.

Chinnakkannu said that making a stone version of the nadhaswaram was fraught with difficulties, not least in discovery a suitable piece of stone.

He was elated when eventually he found what he wanted on farmland coming his home.

"When I hit the stone with a chisel it sounded like bronze. Then I realised my vision had come true," Chinnakkannu said.

Once he began m, it was essential to make the instrument so that it was free of hairline cracks.

"I was weeping almost at every fake for fear that the stone should break," he said.

The nagaswaram has seven become-holes. There are five additional holes drilled at the bottom which are used as controllers.

"I drilled the holes through instinctive means," Chinnakkannu said.
