Obituary Lowell C. Kiesel: Passion for music led him to start instrument, equipment company

When Lowell C. Kiesel started making and selling guitar amplifiers out of his Los Angeles garage in 1946, there weren’t many places musicians could find parts for their instruments.

Mr. Kiesel, whose passion for music started with the Hawaiian lap steel guitar, used a motor from his wife’s sewing machine to wind the coil for guitar pickups, the magnetic devices that transform vibrations from guitar strings into electrical signals that can be amplified.

He started out visiting Los Angeles music stores to make sales, but decided he would do better selling directly to customers, and he did. The business, now known as Carvin, grew into a multimillion-dollar company that sells hand-carved and custom-made guitars and a range of accessories and audio gear. The company, now based in San Diego, is still family-owned and operated and has provided guitars to many professional musicians.

NAMM is out to school and introduce students to music, especially small children to the power of music and musical training.
